Cool weather sturgeon fishing

Cool weather sturgeon fishing.

Well this was our last fishing trip of the season, and it was cold to say the least.  Justin and his Father not only braved the cool temperatures for a day of fishing.  They camped over night on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in our outfitter tent and got two days of fishing in.  Our first morning started slow, then bam!  Sturgeon on, and this guy was stripping line! We finally get him to the boat but the sturgeon sat right on the bottom of the river, 16 feet deep.  He would not come up for anything!  With the lift of the rod slowing, and a few spins of the reel is all we could do.  After a few minutes we had him at the surface.  Catching sturgeon in my opinion is like no other!  We finally landed this beautiful fish for a quick picture then back into the river. Not five minutes later, tap, tap, I holler at Justin to set the hook!  The fight is on!  We boated two beautiful sturgeon in ten minutes!  Unreal action! We managed to boat nine sturgeon in two days.  It was an absolute blast! And a great way to end a fantastic season on the North Saskatchewan River.  We cannot wait to get back on the open water in the spring.

Keep the shinny side down, and your hooks sharp.

Betty and a monster lake sturgeon!

Betty and a monster lake sturgeon!

Well, Betty wanted to catch a sturgeon for her birthday. So we headed out for a cool fall day on the North Saskatchewan River. We started catching walleye after walleye. We couldn't keep them off the hook! Which is a good thing if you are targeting walleye, but when you're constantly catching walleye it's tough to hook up with a sturgeon. So we moved around around until we were getting hit's by the elusive sturgeon. Then the game was on! Once we found them we were catching a sturgeon every 30 to 40 min. We managed to boat 6 sturgeon for the day. Which was a great birthday wish come true times six! Not to mention all the walleye we caught. It was a fantastic day! Six sturgeon, one was just shy of 60". And a handful of smaller ones. Fishing does not get any better in Alberta!

Colin's monster fall walleye!

Colin's monster fall walleye!

We are sliding into the best river fishing of the season!  We just landed our first monster walleye of the year. This beautiful walleye is in the top ten fish I have personally seen. People dream of setting the hook on such a big fish!

Colin and his father got out for a day of river fishing with us and did they turn it on.  We boated this dandy of a fall eye, along with a 18lb jackfish and a couple over the 10lb mark. Not bad for a day of fishing! I will say that after Colin and his father caught these great fish it was time for a bite to eat. I seen in the corner of my eye of his cooler was a banana!  I could not believe it, I truly believe banana's are bad luck on a fishing boat. But the myth is busted on my boat after what I had seen!

We are slowing wrapping things up for the season.  With two more weeks of fishing trips booked we will hopefully be tying into some great fall fish! With the walleye schooling up we are catching great numbers, along with some great size. I will say it's been great to see a lot of young fish in the river.  I know people want to catch the big guys! But it's the little guys that become the river hogs.  Saying that, handle all fish with care when releasing.

Good luck to all! Keep the shining side down and your hooks sharp!

Late August fishing

Wayne, and his trophy North Saskatchewan River Jackfish! He followed up with a 48" sturgeon that evening.

We are slowing creeping up to the end of the month, and that's when the big boys come out to feed! Last year we caught some of our biggest fish on the last week of August and into the middle of September. Lunker's Fishing Adventures your full time all inclusive fishing outfitter.
